Waste Segregation: An Overview
Waste segregation is the process of identifying, classifying, dividing, and sorting waste materials to promote effective reduction, reuse, and recycling. Proper segregation starts with accurately identifying the type of waste generated at the source.
Classification of Waste
Based on their biological, physical, and chemical properties, waste can be classified into the following categories:
- Dry Waste: Includes non-soiled and recyclable/non-recyclable items such as paper, plastic, glass, metal, wood, clothing, cans, and bottles.
- Wet Waste: Comprises organic waste like leftover food, soiled food wrappers, tissues, paper towels, hygiene products, and garden waste. These materials can contaminate recyclables if mixed.
- Sanitary Waste: Refers to solid or liquid waste generated from human activities, including certain types of medical waste.
- Hazardous Household Waste: Household items that contain toxic, corrosive, ignitable, or reactive components, excluding used oil.
- E-Waste: All forms of discarded electronic equipment and components.
- Hazardous Waste: Waste containing harmful, toxic, or reactive chemicals that pose a threat to human health and the environment.
- Inert Waste: Waste materials that are non-reactive and do not decompose easily, such as sand, bricks, and construction debris.
Why Waste Segregation is Important
Effective waste segregation is crucial because certain waste types can be hazardous to health and the environment if not managed properly. Improper mixing of different waste types leads to contamination, making treatment and recycling difficult or impossible. Such mixed waste often ends up in landfills, contributing to pollution.
By segregating waste at source, we can:
- Enable effective treatment and recycling of each type of waste.
- Reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and dump yards.
- Prevent the spread of disease and contamination of water and land.
Waste segregation is the first and most important step in any waste management solution, whether at the individual, household, or community level.
Color Codes for Waste Bins
To make segregation easier and more efficient, color-coded bins are used:
Type of Waste | Color of Bin |
Wet Waste | Green |
Dry Waste | Blue |
Sanitary Waste | Red |
E-Waste | Black or Grey |
Hazardous Waste | Black |
Placement of Bins for Source Segregation
To ensure proper segregation, waste must be separated right at the point of generation. This means placing the appropriate bin in specific areas based on the type of waste commonly produced there:
- Green bins (for wet waste) in kitchens and food prep areas
- Blue bins (for dry waste) in living areas and offices
- Red bins (for sanitary waste) in bathrooms
- Black or grey bins (for e-waste and hazardous materials) in utility or storage rooms
Strategic placement of bins encourages responsible waste disposal and ensures waste remains uncontaminated, thereby supporting recycling and safe disposal processes.
